Splitting full page scans into separate files

Converted three bins of physical photos to full page scans. Spent a summer just scanning everything on three different scanners daisy-chained to an iMac. The result is as expected. (2,988) 11"X13" 300-600 dpi scans. 2-8 images per page, some portrait, some landscape, skewed, different orientations and sizes. Let’s just call it scanner’s fever dream.
At the time, my thought was “let’s just convert these and I will figure out the extraction later.”
I was hoping that this Flying Meat vehicle (Pro) would drive me the rest of the way…

The minimum goal is to detect the edges of each image on the scanned page, extract and save at the scanned resolution. I can further dream that it would auto rotate them before saving. But that is my request for help. I am seeing so many smart answers here about detailed workflows I am wondering where this info is as it seems an obvious photo management ask. Probably overlooking a command. Thank you for reading this and any tips tricks. I currently use Affinity Photo 2 for image processing if that helps.

Auto rotate, and auto cut out of scanned images is something that’s on the todo list.

I don’t have anything to offer you right now though. It’s something I really want though.

Well, I thank you for recognizing the need. I will continue my search, but if anyone knows a MacOS based application, give me a reply.

Been several months since your post. In case you still are looking for an answer. I have a similar task facing me. When I was researching I found a link on StackExchange that might help you out for the task of separating out the images when you have already done the scanning.

In my case since I am just starting the link pointed me to a solution using MacOS to scan which is good, if a bit slow. Also the VueScan app I use to connect to an old scanner also does this and apparently photoshop will also do this for you.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. It’s still on the todo list for now, but I’ll make sure to checkout StackExchange for ideas when I start implementing it.
