HDR and gain map support

Hi there,

Apologies for rare visits…

Retrobatch is the most amazing product for efficient generating of small, good looking .webp files for web use, but the world is fast changing and with the forthcoming generation of browsers, HDR support will be embedded in virtually all new browsers.

So, I suggest there needs to be HDR support in Retrobatch. Although JPEG-XL export is an option, I would suggest .AVIF, which I predict will slowly replace JPEG. However, any gain maps embedded in the AVIF or JPEG-XL file need to remain as these are the key to proper image display on non-HDR (SDR) screens.

Is this feasible or will it necessitate big development input?

Nick

HDR support is something that I’ve looked at a bit, but it’s tricky to do, and there’s a handful of different ways for apps to do this. I’m not sure which way I’ll handle it yet.

So, it’s something I’d like to see in Retrobatch (and Acorn as well). I don’t have a timeline yet, and it’s going to take quite a bit more research and development on my part before I can get something out for everyone to play with.

Thanks for the heads up Gus, I can imagine it is complex. A friend / colleague has been doing a lot of dev work on the plugin side of other apps and now one of the leading voices in HDR, if you want an intro?

Sure, I’d be happy to meet them! support@flyingmeat.com would work as an email address.
