Hi, I am trying to crop an image to 8.5”x7”, losing some of the edge material, and getting nowhere. The crop sizes seem to be in pixels and I have my rulers set to inches. When I do crop the image it becomes very small in the centre of the screen. When I do shift/0 it does grow to full screen size, but at what resolution for print I am not sure?
Basically I am in a real muddle and would appreciate some help / pointers. i have tried googling and looking at the manual as well!

What version of Acorn are you using?
In the latest version (version 8.6), the crop palette will show the dimensions as inches if you have your image set to use inches as a measurement unit. You can change this value in the prefs, or control-click on a ruler to change the unit.
However, I’m guessing that the DPI (dots per inch) of the image needs to be managed a little bit. The DPI of an image controls how many pixels take up an inch. In the old days, that was generally 72 by default. These days with high res printers and displays, that value can change things quite a bit. If you’re wanting a 8.5x7 aspect ratio, and you don’t care what the DPI is in the end, that can be done with a little preset, and I can walk you through that if needed.

New to this and lots to take in. Yes to help with preset please, much appreciated! As I print at 300 dpi can this be controlled with the preset as well. If not, how do I go about it please?

The key points are to make sure your image is already set to 300dpi, measurements are set to inches, and then you add a new crop and put in your dimensions of 8.5×7. Check the “keep aspect ratio” checkbox, and then the “lock dimensions” checkbox. Then make your crop!
The image will resize after the crop so that it’s still 300dpi, and has the correct dimensions.

I am now on the right track I think! The whole dpi, colour space, printer, screen, resolution settings thing does my head in. But I will get there in the end I trust.
